What is cellulite?
Cellulite is thought to be caused by the securing of the skin to an underlying
fatty layer that covers the deep muscles of the body by vertical fibrous strands
of connective tissue. These strands of connective tissue form a complex network, and fat is grouped within it. Cellulite is the appearance of fat pushing out against the skin that is being held down by fibrous strands.
The best simple description is to think of a mattress that is filled with fluffy stuffing (fat). The mattress is secured together by vertical bands (fibrous strands) that go from one side to the other (from skin to fatty layer). The mattress bulges from the pressure of the stuffing wherever it is not being held together by the strings.
